After a heavy storm the Des Plaines River spills into the trail forest and turns the woods into something out of a fever dream — trees standing in purple-blue floodwater, neon green canopy blazing overhead, light hitting the surface in ways it was never supposed to. This isn’t a swamp. It’s a forest preserve in suburban Illinois that floods after big storms and briefly becomes one of the most extraordinary places I’ve ever stood.
